For whatever reason, Sony decided not to use one of the more space saving codecs.
Like a lot of early Blu-Rays, an LPCM surround sound track is included along with a Dolby Digital version.

Again, much like with the audio, they decided to use the MPEG-2 codec for video compression instead of the more efficient VC-1 or AVC codecs. What's more baffling is that the HD-DVD version of the film does use VC-1 encoding, leading to far less compression. On lower resolution displays, like 720p for instance, the compression isn't noticeable and looks perfectly fine. However, on 1080p displays or higher it looks noticeably compressed with mosquito noise through most of the film. To top things off, the brightness levels are too high, leaving blacks looking more dark grey and washed out.

Luckily, this film doesn't have the same issues that the previous one did. The bit-rate is very high, with no compression visible. Colors and contrast are great, with deep inky blacks.
