BOX-ART

-_-_-_-_-

In front of a render of the, "candy room," in the factory is a render of the cast. Wonka is in the front, with the children and their parents behind him. The films logo is in the center in a sparkle-y golden font. The only weird thing about the cover is that the background behind the cast is the sky instead of the factory's interior.

The back consists of a background made of a material similar to the golden sparkles on the font cover, with various things overlaid on top. Some renders of Charlie & an Oompa Loompa are to the sides, with a description in the middle. A blue box underneath has a list of some extras, with various tech. specs. and texts at the bottom.

MENUS

-_-_-

The menu is an overlay, made up of a render of the candy room. Sub menus will take you to scenes, language options, and extras. A still image background is available but the film automatically plays as soon as you start, so it's rather useless with Blu-Ray's on-the-fly menu system.

AUDIO

While the original mono mix is not available, a decent sounding surround sound remix is the main track here. At times there is some clipping it seems, but the track overall is adequate. Several lossy mono dubs are included, two of which are fully localized. The rest simply dub the dialogue, but the songs cut to the original English. A Japanese dub is available only if your player is set the Japanese.

The opening credits are oddly window-boxed, but the main feature is an open matte widescreen. There's no noticeable compression artifacts, and the contrast is great. Colors are very 70's, with lot's of bright pastels! It's a bit soft, with some light film grain. The only real issue with the presentation is, is that the framing is a bit off. The DVD version is framed much tighter, and so is the 4K Blu-Ray, meaning the matting isn't correct. No major issues arise from this, but it's always nice to have the correct theatrical framing!

Much like the film, the cover is quite...bizarre. A render of Wonka is front & center, with a bubble above him containing the films logo. There's some stuff in the background, I'm not really sure what it is, candy maybe?

The back, like the front, uses candy and bubbles. The film description & special features are in colorful bubbles beside another render of Wonka. Various texts are at the bottom with an auburn grid showing tech. specs.

The menus are a blue overlay system, containing all your options such as language, scene select, and special features.

AUDIO

-_-_-

The main audio mix here is an uncompressed 24 bit English 5.1 track. Several 5.1 Dolby EX dubs are available, all of which are fully localized and at full bit-rate Dolby Digital. I assume the EX track is more accurate to theatrical exhibition, so I'm not sure why they didn't just use a 6.1 DTS-MA track instead of favoring a lossless 5.1 downmix.

Like the previous film, the Japanese track is hidden unless your player is set to Japanese. The, "Music Only," track is a nice addition but it's strictly the score, the vocal songs are left as is disappointingly. It should have been labeled, more accurately, an isolated score rather than a, "Music Only, " track.

This film, like the first, is slightly opened to from 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 widescreen. At times the video has a very waxy DNR'd look, whether or not it's intentional is unknown. Colors, strangely, are vibrant yet also subdued...if that makes any since. The film is a little soft, and there's little, if any, grain which Is why I suspect noise reduction. Contrast seems a bit too light, leaving the darks more grey than true black.
