Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island

VIDEO

Around the time of the release of the sequel, the movie seems to have been remastered from the original film! Seemingly, the opening title was remade digitally, but all else is a complete re-scan. The colors and contrast are much better, with the old master being rather undersaturated in comparison. I don't see much grain, which could imply some noise reduction, but you can't be sure with an iTunes encode. iTunes compression definitely leaves something to be desired, with loads of artifacts. A Blu-Ray would be preferred, but WB has yet to release one!

FINAL THOUGHTS

-_-_-_-_-_-_-

This version has, so far, only been released digitally. With the second film being recently remastered on Amazon Prime, we may see a trilogy Blu-Ray someday yet!

*Update, the film has now received a Blu-Ray! It appears to be the same master, but with much better compression. (Obviously)

This version of film, unlike the DVD, is presented in an open matte widescreen version. All of WB's Scooby-Doo films from 2002-2010 were produced in 16:9 HD but protected for 4:3. Sometimes the framing has a lot of empty space, suggesting more focus was put into the full-screen framing. It makes since, with CRT TV's being the standard for such a long time.

Again, iTunes compression is not great but the animation is very sharp & clean which helps keep artifacts at bay most of the time.

AUDIO:

While the DVD has a full 5.1 mix, the iTunes version simply has 128 Kb/s AAC 2.0 English & French stereo. There is also English, French, and Italian subtitles. (The DVD has no French dub or Italian subtitles.)

FINAL THOUGHTS

-_-_-_-_-_-_-

I wish they would released the film on Blu-Ray, but most of the What's New, Scooby-Doo? era films never were. They skipped over most of them, I'm not entirely sure why. WB hasn't been releasing any of the DTV films on Blu-Ray since 2016, even the new ones. It seems digital is the way to go from most of the films.
